Cosmetic dentistry is thought of as the dental procedures meant to improve the appearance of your teeth and your smile. But at Dr. Wesley Yemoto DDS in San Jose, our understanding goes a little deeper than that. We want to dispel a few common myths about cosmetic dentistry.
Myth #1: Cosmetic Dentistry is Never Necessary for a Healthy Smile
Many cosmetic dental procedures are not solely cosmetic. Dental implants, for example, prevent serious problems such as tooth movement, bone loss and difficulty chewing and speaking.
Myth #2: A Dental Bridge is the Only Way to Replace a Missing Tooth
Dental bridges have been used for many years with success. However, dental implants are often a better choice for replacing one or more missing teeth. Dental implants have many important advantages for Campbell dental patients. They feel like natural teeth, they are stronger, and they are easier to clean than dental bridges. Tooth implants can also be used to anchor dentures or partial dentures.
Myth #3: Over-the-counter Products are as Effective as Professional Teeth Whitening
We offer our patients teeth whitening treatments that are generally more effective than what you’ll find at the grocery store. Toothpastes and whitening strips may remove surface stains, but they do not provide optimum results and can often lead to uneven coloring.
Myth #4: Dental Bonding is the Best Way to Fix a Chipped Tooth.
Dental bonding can restore the shape of a tooth, but may not be the best long-term solution. If you have a damaged tooth, you may be a good candidate for porcelain veneers.
Myth #5: Metal Braces are the Only Way to Correct Crooked Teeth
Traditional braces are still though of as the best way to straighten teeth. But Invisalign clear braces can correct most misaligned bites, are not very noticeable when you’re wearing them, and can be removed for meals and brushing.
