Soft Tissue Treatment in San Jose, CA 95118

The term “soft tissue” can refer to several different structures in the mouth, including gum tissue and oral mucosa. When a patient has problems with their soft tissues that cause pain, irritation, or bleeding, our dentists may recommend soft tissue treatments to correct these issues and help patients regain comfort in their daily routines.

The most common soft tissue problem is gingivitis or inflammation of the gums. This condition is caused by the growth of bacteria inside the mouth that irritates the delicate tissues and causes them to bleed. Although common in adults, gingivitis can also occur in children and teens. Scaling and root planing is often performed to treat periodontitis, a deeper form of gum disease that can cause the teeth to loosen or even fall out. A very thin layer of tissue is worn away during this procedure at Wesley Yemoto DDS, to allow the roots of the teeth to be exposed and eradicated.

Types of Soft Tissue Treatment

Gingivectomies

Gingivitis, the earliest stage of gum disease, can take a long time to develop and is frequently imperceptible at first. Periodontitis, a more damaging type of illness that can irrevocably destroy the underlying bone and nearby tissues, can develop from gingivitis over time. Gingivectomies remove affected gum tissue, stopping the disease from spreading and sparing you from future, more complex therapy.

Gum Grafting

Gum recession can cause tooth sensitivity before progressing to bone degradation and tooth loss. We can repair gum recession by grafting a small piece of tissue from the roof of your mouth or a donor source into the recessed area. The graft will gradually heal and blend in with your freshly healed gum line.

Soft Tissue Recontouring

Even if you have a complete set of healthy teeth, you may be unhappy with your smile. The equilibrium between the teeth and gums needs to be corrected. If you believe you have too much gum tissue, also known as a "gummy smile," we can help you achieve a more harmonious relationship between your teeth and gums. We remove a piece of the extra gums to display more of the tooth underneath, making the teeth appear longer and the gums shorter.

Are You a Candidate for Soft Tissue Management?

Gum disease begins with red, swollen, bleeding, sore gums, unpleasant breath, or a foul odor or taste. Better flossing and brushing routines at home may help in the early stages of periodontal disease. However, soft tissue treatment is required in the later stages of gum disease to avoid permanent and long-term damage, such as tooth and bone loss. Patients may require soft tissue care to save their teeth and gums and preserve a strong jawline. Our dentist can determine if you are a good candidate for periodontal therapy.
